Five Ways to Have Fun as a Family This Fall

I love this time of year! The temperatures are getting cool enough to bring out cozy sweaters and scarves, but warm enough to wear layers you can shed if you need to. Leaves are changing colours, adding hues of yellows, oranges and reds throughout neighbourhoods.

And while fall is a lovely time of year it also can be a hectic time; kids are back to school after summer break, Thanksgiving is celebrated followed quickly by Halloween and then before you know it everyone is abuzz with getting ready for the holidays.

But don’t let autumn pass you by in a flash. Take some time to enjoy those fall colours, the crisp air and warm sunshine and get out with your family. Here are five fun fall activities the whole family can enjoy.

  1. Go apple picking! Head out to a local orchard or make the drive to one further away. Either way, get enough juicy apples to take home for school snacks, make puree or bake an apple pie.

  2. Visit a pumpkin patch! You can pick out a large pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern or some small pumpkins to paint with the kids. Don’t forget to wear rubber boots! Those pumpkin fields can get muddy.

  3. Check out local farms or farmer’s markets. Some of these places will be open until November and will have the option to shop for fresh local produce, meats, dairy or baked goods. They may also offer fun family-friendly activities, such as corn mazes or a petting zoo. It is sure to be a memorable experience and it is always wonderful to shop local and support our farmers.

  4. Get outdoor family portraits done. What a wonderful back-drop to have with the colourful leaves in your photos. Take some action shots of your family playing in the fallen leaves!

  5. Have a family fun day inside! If the weather is rainy or you just want to stay cozy at home, create a day of fun for the family. Play board games, build a fort, watch movies, bake cookies, cook together, read books, get creative with crafts, have a pajama party. Do any combination of these or do it all! The most important thing is to have fun.

Is there anything you would add to this list? I’d love to hear your ideas! Comment below.
