Halloween Safety for Parents and Kids

Costumes are picked. Pumpkins are carved. But with Halloween quickly approaching, it’s important for parents to be mindful of keeping this day for tricks and treats one that is safe (and fun, of course!) Here are some great safety tips!

Costumes

  • Try to dress kids in costumes that are brighter in colour

  • Avoid costumes that are too long so that kids won’t trip over them

  • If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the holes for the eyes are large enough for them to see out of properly, and make openings wider if necessary. Masks should also be breathable. You can also use face paint as an alternative to masks

Trick-or-Treating

  • Besides dressing in brighter coloured costumes, another way to help make trick-or-treaters more visible is to use reflective tape on their outfits, carry glow sticks or a flashlight or lantern (make sure these have new batteries in them!)

  • Make sure kids are only going to houses that have lights on

  • Parents should accompany younger children when trick-or-treating. Ensure older kids are going in a group and know ahead of time what route they will take, as well as decide on a time they should be back home

  • Make sure kids are going to houses on one side of the street first and then crossing to the other side. They should avoid crossing back and forth (and remind them to look both ways before crossing!)

  • Remind kids that they should not eat any of their treats until they get home. Parents should inspect the goodies first to ensure there are not any opened ones

Home Owners

  • Make sure the outside of your home is well lit for kids coming to your door. Perhaps replace light bulbs ahead of time to avoid the possibility of any burning out on Halloween night

  • Clear the front of your house of any possible tripping hazards, such as hoses, rakes or other gardening tools, bikes or other outdoor toys

  • Make sure your sidewalk, path and stairs are clear of wet leaves (or for some people, snow!)

So whether this is a day that you revel in spooky tricks or enjoy delicious treats, the most important thing is that you have a safe and happy Halloween!
