To My Son on His 5th Birthday

Five years ago today you came into my life and forever changed it.

Five years ago today you were placed in my arms for the first time and I discovered in an instant what it’s like to feel a love so pure and powerful and all-consuming.

For five years I have had the pleasure and honour of being your mommy.

I have rocked you in my arms and sang sweet lullabies to you.

I have held you against my chest and listened to your rhythmic breathing as you slept.

I have giggled quietly to myself while watching you chuckle in your sleep (one of the cutest things you did as a baby!) and I would imagine you were dreaming of me or your daddy tickling you.

I have cheered you on when you learned to crawl, climbed stairs for the first time, started walking and learned the alphabet.

I have read you many stories and have watched your love for books grow, often being asked to read a book over and over again.

I have been the recipient of your wonderful warm hugs when I get home from work! (The welcome home hug! You also have a good morning hug, a bedtime hug, a leaving for the day hug, an I love you hug, a just because hug...you get the picture. My son, you love to hug and mommy loves it!)

I have calmed your bedtime fears with snuggles and sharing happy thoughts.

I have watched you become a great big brother, eager to teach your little sister what you know and being playful and affectionate with her.

I have witnessed with pride as you started school for the first time and set out on your educational journey, already learning so many new things and earning your first academic award!

In just five short years, you, my son, have become one of the most inquisitive, caring, funny, smart, affectionate and lovable people I have ever met! I love your adorable silliness, especially when you dance! I love how your smile and laugh are infectious and can brighten anyone’s day. But most importantly, I love being your mom and feel truly blessed to have that honour.
